各向同性和各向異性 物理性質可以在不同的方向進行測量。如果各個方向的測量結果是相同的,說明其物理性質與取向無關,就稱為各向同性。如果物理性質和取向密切相關,不同取向的測量結果迥異,就稱為各向異性。造成這種差別的內在因素是材料結構的對稱性。在氣體、液體或非晶態固體中,原子排列是混亂的,因而就各個方向而言,統計結果是等同的,所以其物理性質必然是各向同性的。而晶體中原子具有規則排列,結構上等同的方向只限于晶體對稱性所決定的某些特定方向。所以一般而言,物理性質是各向異性的。例如, α-鐵的磁化難易方向如圖所示。鋁的彈性模量E沿[111]最大(7700kgf/mm2),沿[100]最小(6400kgf/mm2)。對稱性較低的晶體(如水晶、方解石)沿空間不同方向有不同的折射率。而非晶體(過冷液體),其折射率和彈性模量則是各向同性的。晶體的對稱性很高時,某些物理性質(例如電導率等)會轉變成各向同性。當物體是由許多位向紊亂無章的小單晶組成時,其表觀物理性質是各向同性的。一般合金的強度就利用了這一點。倘若由于特殊加工使多晶體中的小單晶沿特定位向排列(例如金屬的形變"織構"、定向生長的兩相晶體混合物等),則雖然是多晶體其性能也會呈現各向異性。硅鋼片就是這種性質的具體應用。 介于液體和固體之間的液晶,有的雖然分子的位置是無序的,但分子取向卻是有序的。這樣,它的物理性質也具有了各向異性。
