榆科榆科Ulmaceae雙子葉植物綱金縷梅亞綱的一科。喬木或灌木。單葉互生,稀對生,常二列,羽狀脈或基部3出脈,稀基部5出脈或掌狀3出脈,有柄;托葉常呈膜質,側生或柄內生,早落。單被花兩性、單性或雜性,雌雄異株或同株,少數或多數排成聚傘花序,或因序軸短縮而呈簇生狀,或單生,生葉腋或近新枝下部或近基部的苞腋;花被裂片4~8,雄蕊常與花被裂片同數而對生,雌蕊由2心皮連合而成,子房上位,通常1室,具1枚倒生胚珠。果為核果或小堅果,有時小堅果具翅。約16屬230余種,主要產于北半球,分布于熱帶至寒溫帶。其中種較多的為樸屬、山黃麻屬、榆屬和白顏樹屬;有4個單種屬,即青檀、刺榆、水榆及Mirandaceltismonoica。中國有8屬約50種,分布幾遍全國,其中榆屬占將近一半,青檀屬為特有屬。榆樹榆科植物的化石僅發現落葉型,多數葉子邊緣具齒,主要在北半球溫帶、暖溫帶和亞熱帶。最早在晚白堊世,在歐亞大陸和北美的第三紀地層中廣泛地找到過榆樹、樸樹、櫸樹、刺榆、青檀、糙葉樹及Ulminium等屬植物的花粉化石、葉及內果皮。在中國發現榆科化石的地區為東北、華北、山東、陜西、新疆等省區。前人以形態性狀為依據,將榆科分為兩個族或兩個亞科,近來得到了植物化學家的支持,但對某些屬的歸宿卻有不同的意見,如J.哈欽森根據花、果、胚、子葉等性狀,分榆科為榆族和樸族兩族。榆科多數種類的木材堅硬、細致,耐磨損,韌性強,材質優良,可供家具、器具、建筑、車輛、橋梁、造船、農具等用;枝皮、樹皮纖維強韌,可代麻制繩、織袋,或作造紙及人造棉原料。有些屬(如白顏樹屬、樸屬、糙葉樹屬、榆屬等)的種子油可供工業用,榆屬種子油還可供醫藥用及化工原料。某些生長較快、材質優良的喬木樹種可作造林樹種,尤其是榆屬的某些種類(如白榆等)已在樹種貧乏的溫帶地區廣為種植。
