田菁  豆科(Leguminosae) 田菁屬一年生灌木狀草本。又名堿菁、澇豆。一種優良的夏季綠肥作物。原產東半球熱帶地區。中國以福建、臺灣、廣東種植最早,逐漸北移至江淮流域。現北方各地也有栽培。根系發達,多分布在20~40厘米的土層內,根瘤多而大,固氮能力強。淹水情況下可形成海綿狀組織和不定根,也著生根瘤。株高2~3米以上,多分枝,莖基部常木質化。偶數羽狀復葉,葉片長15~30厘米,小葉30~40對,矩圓形,葉柄長7~12厘米,有趨光性,夜間小葉閉合。總狀花序腋生,著花3~6朵,黃色,旗瓣上有紫色斑點。莢果細長,15~25厘米長,成熟時易爆裂,每莢有種子20~35粒。種子矩圓形,青褐色或黃綠色,千粒重13~16克,過熟的種子種皮角質層加厚,不易吸水,成為硬子(見圖)。      田菁喜溫好濕,種子在12℃時才能萌發。出苗后30天內生長遲緩,以后進入快速生長期,在高溫多濕條件下,每天可生長3~5厘米。耐淹能力強,如水不淹沒頂端,仍能繼續生長。耐瘠、耐鹽,在全鹽含量0.3%的土壤能出全苗,全鹽含量0.5%的土壤仍能正常生長。常用作新墾鹽堿荒地的先鋒作物。中國南方雙季稻區可先育苗,后在早稻田埂或稻行間插栽,作為晚稻基肥;旱地可與高粱、玉米等中耕作物間套種或麥茬復種;丘陵荒地或農田隙地,可作留種種植或刈割堆肥。單種田菁每公頃可產鮮草37.5噸以上;可與其他作物間作、套作或復種,每公頃可產鮮草15噸左右。鮮草含水分80%左右,氮0.4~0.6%,磷酸0.1%左右,氧化鉀0.15~0.2%。配合其他飼料可喂牛、羊或打漿喂豬。種子含有膠質,可供石油工業上利用,莖桿可供造紙和剝取纖維。
