鼢鼠鼢鼠Myospalacinae;mole-rats嚙齒目倉鼠科鼢鼠亞科的通稱。體型粗壯,體長15~27厘米;吻鈍,門齒粗大;四肢短粗有力,前足爪特別發達,大于相應的指長,尤以第三趾最長,是挖掘洞道的有力工具;眼小,幾乎隱于毛內,視覺差,故有瞎老鼠之稱;耳殼僅是圍繞耳孔的很小皮褶;尾短,略長于后足,被稀疏毛或裸露;毛色因地區而異,從灰色、灰褐色到紅色。共1屬6種,分布于中國中部和北部,以及西伯利亞和蒙古國。鼢鼠為地下生活的鼠類。棲息于森林邊緣、草原和農田,在中國青海地區還可棲于海拔3900米的高山草甸。晝夜均活動,但白天只限于地下,夜間偶爾到地面尋食。吃植物的根、莖和種子。有貯存食物的習性。不冬眠。挖掘洞道速度驚人,洞穴構造復雜,長而多分支,總長度可達100余米。洞口外有許多排列不規則的土堆,是由洞道內挖出的松土。平時地面無明顯的洞口,如洞道遭到破壞,立即用土堵塞,這是它們防御敵害的一種本能。鼢鼠挖洞活動受氣候影響顯著。3~9月繁殖,年產2胎,每胎產仔1~8個。中國北部常見的為中華鼢鼠。鼢鼠因貯食和挖掘復雜的洞系,是農牧業害獸之一。
