水玻璃 又稱可溶性玻璃。為易溶于水的硅酸鈉，最簡單的化學式為Na2SiO3,實際組成較復雜，是各種硅酸鈉的混合物,其化學式應為mNa2O·nSiO2。純的Na2SiO3為無色正交晶體, 熔點1088℃。它的五水合物Na2SiO3·5H2O為白色三斜晶體,熔點72.2℃,密度1.749克/厘米3；100℃時失水。水玻璃的水溶液又稱泡花堿，呈強堿性，在溶液中存在以下一些平衡： 純的Na2SiO3可由純石英砂與燒堿或純堿共熔制得： 水玻璃的工業制法是將石英砂、純堿和煤粉混合后放在溫度為1100～1350℃的反射爐內進行熔燒。反應完畢后，將產物冷卻，即得玻璃狀灰色或綠色塊狀物，用水蒸氣處理得到粘稠液體，就是商品水玻璃。 水玻璃能加固土壤。浸過水玻璃的三合土耐摩擦，浸過水玻璃的木材或織物不易著火。水玻璃和白堊或水泥調成的耐火泥可粘合瓷器、玻璃或砌壁爐。在水玻璃稀溶液中浸過的雞蛋可在常溫下長久保存不壞。泡花堿可做堿性發泡劑。
