熱質說  歷史上關于熱的本質的一種錯誤理論。這個學說認為熱是一種自相排斥的、無重量的流質,稱作熱質或熱素。它不生不滅,可透入一切物體之中。一個物體是"熱"還是"冷",由它所含熱質的多少決定。較熱的物體含有較多的熱質,冷熱不同的兩個物體接觸時,熱質便從較熱的物體排入較冷的物體,直到兩者的溫度相同時為止。一個物體所減少的熱質,恰好等于另一物體所增加的熱質。    1714年,D.G.華倫海特改良了溫度計并定出了華氏溫標以后,熱學才正式走上了實驗科學的道路。J.布萊克澄清了熱和溫度這兩個混淆了的概念,他將熱稱為熱的份量,溫度稱為熱的強度。他認為:熱質與冰結合而成為水,熱質再與水結合而成為汽。熱質說就作為早期解釋熱學實驗的簡單學說而為一些科學家所用。熱質說在啟發和解釋量熱學的實驗方面曾起過積極的作用,它能成功地說明混合量熱法的規律,即兩個溫度不相等的物體混合以后達到相同溫度時,如果沒有向周圍散失熱量,其中一個物體所失去的熱量恰好等于另一物體所得到的熱量。1798年,朗福德了解到鉆炮膛生熱而進行了摩擦產生熱的實驗,從而證明了所產生的熱量同所作的功成正比,排斥了熱質說。但是熱質說仍繼續存在約半個世紀。后來S.卡諾在用卡諾循環導出卡諾定理時,結論正確,但還是憑借熱質說。直到能量轉換和守恒定律建立以后,確認熱是物質運動的一種形式,熱質說才被徹底否定(見熱的本質、熱力學第一定律)。
