計量計量measurement為確定量值而進行的一組操作。中國古代稱為度量衡，其原始含義是關于長度、容積和質量的計量，主要器具為尺、斗、秤。隨著科技的進步、生產的發展，對計量的要求越來越高，計量的概念和內容也在不斷變化和發展，遂形成了現代計量，并出現了研究計量理論和實踐的專門學科——計量學。計量學是現代物理學的一個分支。比較成熟和普遍開展的計量有長度、力學、熱工、電磁、無線電、時間頻率、聲學、光學、化學和電離輻射計量，即所謂的十大計量。而計量學的研究范圍已突破物理量的范疇，擴展到化學和工程量乃至生理量和心理量等計量。研究內容包括單位、單位制；單位的基準、標準的建立；量值傳遞與檢定測試；計量誤差與數據處理；計量管理等。計量具有以下基本特點：①準確性。它表征計量結果與被計量的量的真值的接近程度。嚴格地說，只有量值而無準確度的結果不是計量結果。②一致性。計量單位的統一是量值統一的重要前提。無論在何時、何地，利用何種方法、器具，也無論何人進行計量，只要符合有關計量所要求的條件，計量結果就應在給定的誤差范圍內一致。否則，計量將失去其社會意義。③溯源性。任何一個計量結果，都能通過連續的比較鏈與原始的標準器具聯系起來。溯源性是準確性和一致性的技術歸宗。溯源可以使計量科技與人們的認識相對統一，從而使計量的準確與一致得到基本保證。④法制性。量值的準確統一，不僅要有一定的技術手段，而且還要有相應的法律和行政管理，特別是那些對國計民生有明顯影響的計量，更必須有法制保障。否則，量值的準確統一便不能實現，計量的作用便無法發揮。
